Brisbane Cricket Ground Redevelopment

Brisbane Cricket Ground Redevelopment

The redevelopment of The Gabba is our signature project.

The home of cricket in Queensland and of the Brisbane Lions AFL team, the Gabba is located less than 5 km from the Brisbane CBD and was redeveloped in four major stages over 10 years. Each stage could only be committed on financial feasibility and commercial infrastructure requirements, as determined by the popularity of the home teams and the venue itself.

Particular challenges and innovative solutions in this project included:

  • Upgrading total ground capacity to 42,700 from Master Plan by adding an additional seating tier without affecting form or function;
  • Successful relocation of a number of 120-year old fig trees to the primary school next door;
  • Negotiating volumetric leases in strata for those parts of the stands that overhang the surrounding streets;
  • Reconstructing the entire playing surface to FIFA standards in the middle of cyclone season for the Olympic Football Tournament (Sydney 2000);
  • Erecting the slimmest 75m tall light towers in the world
  • Designing corporate suite furniture for flexibility of configuration.

PDS provided full project management services as follows:

  • Project Brief development and needs analysis
  • Concept analysis
  • Design consultant team selection

  • Project management procedures
  • Risk analysis
  • Contractor selection and appointment

PDS, as well as the design and construction teams, has been recognised by many professional organisations by receiving numerous achievement awards for this iconic project.

Lastly we are pleased that even to this day, the Gabba is still recognised as being “one of the best boutique sports grounds in the world”.
